Larry Turns 60!
Saturday night was the big party to celebrate Larry’s 60th (his real bday is May 29th). The weather was sketchy but the bday gods were looking out for us as there was about 15 seconds of light rain and nothing else. Could have been a snow storm for the amount of high gusty winds we had earlier in the day. A big thanks to our friend Joanna who drove the furthest and helped an incredible amount in the kitchen…We love you Joanna!

Connie Overton and James Gilliam – A great big thanks to James for being our official grill master chef

My friend Gaye LaCroix is the mother of two girls who attend Basalt public schools and she is on the Board of Basalt Kids. She called to see if I would volunteer my time and my cameras to photograph the annual Taste of Basalt at the Roaring Fork Club on Saturday, November 7th. I photographed this event about ten years ago and wow has it grown. All of the proceeds from this well-known local event go directly to the Basalt public schools to purchase whatever is needed by the teachers and the students – from computers to art supplies to band instruments and maybe best of all – a scholarship for a college-bound senior.
Many if not all of the Basalt and El Jebel restaurants and caterers were there offering tasty samples of their signature meals. Bistro Basalt offered crabcakes (truly fabulous) and Darwin's of El Jebel fame was plying the guests with their yummy beef stroganoff. My friend Steve McKenney and his wife Greta own European Catering and their paella was outstanding.
My friend Chris Goplerud was there playing the drums with Joe Kelly of Smokin' Joe and the Gypsies. Zoe was playing bass and Chris Bank was playing the sax among other instruments. They really got the party started with lots dancing and great covers of classic rock favorites.
I was taking pictures all night so I did not get to sample as many of the food and drinks as I might have otherwise and everything I had was beyond yummy. We are truly lucky to live in a town with such talented and generous restauranteurs, caterers and liquor distributors.
The Taste of Basalt has evolved into one of the valley's favorite events. It is affordable enough for "real" locals to attend yet supports a great cause and it is held during off-season so it's more relaxed and fun for everyone. I even saw a few local teachers who were in attendence. How great that our local teachers can attend an event that supports Basalt schools in such a real and pragmatic way.
Check out all of the pictures I took on Pictage.com/754279 Here are a few of my favs from that evening with captions below each image.
On the right is Martha O'Keefe who was the Event Chair back in the day when I first photographed the event with longtime local realtor Carla VanAlstyne.

Kathy Welgos’s Big 6-0 Birthday Party in Aspen
Our friend Kathy Welgos turned 60 on March 8th and she hosted a wonderful dinner party at the Cloud Nine restaurant at Aspen Highlands on Saturday, March 6th.
The guests were ready to board the snowcats at 5:45 pm and warm blankets and wine were provided to keep everyone toasty!!
Tony Welgos pointing out the beautiful sunset to Cindy Maetzold Johnson and Stephanie Kettler on the way up Highlands.
The attentive staff at Cloud Nine served drinks and appetizers first. As the night warmed up, we had an excellent salad with a scallop on top and then a yummy butternut squash soup.
The main entree was our choice of beef or fish…I had the beef which was served over a polenta cake. The fish was halibut and it was awesome.
Ricky Gates is on the staff of Cloud Nine and quite a famous runner in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. His mom Trish is one of Kathy’s oldest friends as is Stephanie Kettler – all three pictured below.
Here is an assortment of pictures from that fabulous evening on Cloud Nine!!

Taste of Basalt 2010
Another Taste has come and gone and what a great time was had by all. It is always one of the best locals events of the year and this year’s event raised more money than last years! Congratulations to everyone who supports the Taste of Basalt year after year.
There were lots of new faces this year including school teachers from the Basalt school district and many others who value the local flavor of our community and all of the great restaurants, caterers, and vendors that support the Basalt schools consistently Basaltkids.com. The Roaring Fork Club hosted the event again this year as they have for many years in the past.
The Bo Hale Band is always a favorite and his entourage including his brother Dave Hale, Rob Dasaro, and Ray Di Bacco got the party started with their great covers and fun dance music. My husband Larry’s favorite was Bo’s cover of Huey Lewis and the News “Heart & Soul”. Bo can be reached at 970-987-1542.
Smoke restaurant owned by Jamie and Suzie Theriot was a big hit and “sold out” of their bbq sandwiches and deviled eggs pretty early in the evening smokemodernbbq.com.
One of my personal favs was the tuna/avocado on a crisp appetizer presented by Zheng. My gosh that was yummy! I’m not sure if that particular item is on their menu but it definately should be!
Here is a picture of my friend Jae Gregory, owner of Artful Gardens Landscaping artfulgardens.net and Holiday Magic aspenchristmasdecor.com with her beau Gregg Mackey, owner of Red Eagle Roofing redeagleroofing.com. Gregg’s company is instrumental in the renovation of the old Emma train depot building. Great work Gregg!
Here is our friend Chris LaCroix, attorney with Garfield and Hecht and husband to Gaye who is on the Basalt Kids Board of Directors and is instrumental in the success of this event year in and year out. Chris is pictured with Jim Light of Chaffin Light Real Estate.
Another tasty treat was provided by Fine Line Bar & Grill located at the former Atlas Pizza in El Jebel. Their bacon wrapped scallops are to die for! finelinebarandgrill.com These guys are open for dinner only at this point and I hope they open for lunch soon!
