Larry Turns 60!
Saturday night was the big party to celebrate Larry’s 60th (his real bday is May 29th). The weather was sketchy but the bday gods were looking out for us as there was about 15 seconds of light rain and nothing else. Could have been a snow storm for the amount of high gusty winds we had earlier in the day. A big thanks to our friend Joanna who drove the furthest and helped an incredible amount in the kitchen…We love you Joanna!

Woody Creek Distillers (WCD) is finally open! The much anticipated Grand Opening of the hyperlocal (meaning their potatoes are grown within a twenty mile radius) vodka, whiskey and eau de vie distillery debuted on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 to a large crowd of locals and visitors alike.
Pat and Mary Scanlan along with Mark Kleckner and his significant other Tracey Snow have been hard at work pulling together the resources and locally grown produce to distill their own vodka and whiskey. The much anticipated Grand Opening did not disappoint as numerous locals and visitors dropped in to sample the vodka and whiskey at Basalt’s newest business venture.
David Roberts and Carol Ann Mawdsley of Jersey, Wales came all the over way from the UK (and Aspen) to enjoy a shot of vodka with WCD bartender Kevin.
The Romaneks came all the way from Illinois (and Aspen) to partake of the smooth libations at the WCD Grand Opening.
At the peak of the party, there were approximately 100 guests in attendance and owners Mark and Pat were constantly giving tours of the amazing facility and describing the process and time it takes to produce just one batch of potato based vodka. The potatoes are grown on the Scanlan ranch in Woody Creek and 550,000 pounds of potatoes are grown on just one 30 acre garden plot. The potato harvesting season only lasts for three months and requires quite a few extra hands to clean and process all of the potatoes.
One of the owners, Pat Scanlan, giving a tour of the distillery. It’s amazing how much science and engineering is involved in producing consistently high quality vodka and spirits. Both Pat and COO Mark Kleckner have extensive backgrounds in engineering and management.
Sue and Ken Krehbiel, owners of Signature Framing, a neighbor to WCD, listen to Pat’s expertise on the finer points of distilling vodka.
The stills themselves are a thing of beauty and show what a high class operation WCD truly is…
And the bottles too! The logo was designed by an Aspen graphic design firm. We all appreciate the value and good karma that “buying local” brings to Basalt and our valley and the world at large.
Mike Scanlon, Town Manager of Basalt and Basalt Mayor Jacque Whitsitt, present Pat Scanlan with the Town of Basalt Proclamation Plaque. My apologies to Mark Kleckner who was out giving a facility tour during this presentation.
Mayor Jacque with the General Contractor Caldera Construction Inc. owner Ray Paschal and friend Marc Tergeoglou who is the owner of Athens Builders in Basalt
Mayor Jacque, Mike Scanlan, and Stubbies owner Trent Castleberry. Trent will be carrying the WCD vodka at Stubbies….another venerable Basalt business supporting WCD.

Locals Sandy and Charles Israel of Aspen made the trek to the Grand Opening
Ruth, Mark and Bonnie Starr of Jack Wilkie Builders Inc. are located just down the street from the new Distillery.
